Grey Necked Wood Rail
(Aramides cajanea)
The Grey Necked Wood Rail can be found in our New World Tropics rainforest building in the back of the King vulture exhibit. He was born January 5, 1993, at the Santa Barbara Zoo. He arrived here, at Connecticut's Beardsley Zoo, on October 10, 1997.
Description: This chicken-sized bird has long, pink legs, a grey neck and back, a rust-colored chest, and a yellow beak. They can run quickly through reeds, rarely flying to escape predators. Their call, often heard at site dawn or dusk, is a repeated chicken-like cackle: pop- tiyi pop-tiyi co-co-co-co-co or sometimes: chittyco, chittyco caw-caw-caw.
Habitat: Swamps, swampy forests and mangroves.
Range: Throughout Mexico and Bolivia; also seen in northern Argentina and Uruguay. Have been introduced into southern Florida.
Diet: Feeds mainly at night on crabs. Will also eat seeds, insects and worms.
Lifespan: unknown
Family Life: Nests are made of grass and reeds placed among the reeds or in a branch overhanging the water. A clutch of 5-8 eggs hatch in 20 days. Chicks are chocolate brown and stay in the nest for a few days. The male takes charge and feeds the chicks when they leave the nest.
Status: Fairly common throughout its range.
