Boat Lily
The Boat Lily (Tradescantia spathacea), also known as Moses-in-a-basket, is a striking herbaceous perennial valued for both its bold foliage and unique flowers. This low-growing plant forms a compact rosette, typically reaching 6 to 12 inches in height, with narrow, spiraled leaves that are deep green on top and rich purple underneath. Over time, it spreads to create a dense, vibrant ground cover.
Its small white flowers are tucked, distinctive, boat-shaped purple bracts—giving the plant its memorable nickname. These blooms appear seasonally, adding subtle contrast to the plant’s dramatic foliage.
Native to southern Mexico, Belize, and Guatemala, the Boat Lily thrives in warm, humid environments similar to habitats represented throughout the Zoo.
Status
The Boat Lily is not considered extinct and remains a widely cultivated species, appreciated for its resilience and ornamental appeal.
