Make a difference at Beardsley Zoo.
Volunteers are an essential part of Connecticut’s Beardsley Zoo, contributing their time and energy to support our education and conservation mission. From joining Zoomobile programs with our Educators to engaging with visitors, caring for the grounds, or assisting with animals, volunteers make a meaningful impact on both the Zoo community and our guests.
Below is an overview of the different volunteer opportunities and how to get started.
Zoo Friends assist with special events, greet visitors, and share educational information about habitats. Volunteers must be at least 18, complete an application and interview, and attend a one-day training session. Training classes are offered throughout the year. Zoo Gardeners help maintain and expand the Zoo’s botanical collection in the Greenhouse, outdoor beds, and select animal habitats. They may also assist with events and educate the public on horticulture. Volunteers must be at least 18, complete an application and interview, and attend a one-day training class. Classes are held twice a year. Call (203) 330-6046 for details.
Docents serve as the Zoo’s volunteer educators, assisting with special events, education programs, and public interactions about animals and environmental issues. To become a Docent, volunteers must be a Zoo Friend or Zoo Gardener in good standing and complete Docent training. Contact the Volunteer Office at (203) 330-6046.
Civic organizations seeking a unique environment for a service project are welcome to contact the Volunteer Office at (203) 330-6046.
Designed for teens ages 14–18, this program offers an inside look at careers across the Zoo—from animal care and education to development, marketing, maintenance, and administration. Participants attend career workshops with hands-on activities, take part in job shadows, create public presentations, and complete a year-end project. This hybrid program (online and in-person) has a $120 fee covering materials and a t-shirt.
High school students can engage in local conservation projects, field work, and public education, working alongside field biologists to explore the role of zoos in conservation. This year-long program has its busiest period in the summer. Applications are accepted through January 12 each year, with training beginning in February.
