Nigerian Dwarf Goat
Physical Description
Nigerian Dwarf Goats are a compact breed, typically weighing between 40 and 60 pounds. They usually grow to about 24 to 30 inches long and stand around 16 to 20 inches tall, with males sometimes reaching up to 23 inches in height. They have a short, straight coat and can be found in a wide range of colors, including red, brown, black, white, tan, and many combinations in between. As they grow, they also develop small horns.
Where They Live
Nigerian Dwarf Goats are domesticated animals that live in managed farm and agricultural settings. Because they are small and adaptable, they are often raised in both rural and more developed areas.
What They Eat
Nigerian Dwarf Goats are natural browsers, which means they prefer to nibble on a variety of plants rather than graze in one spot for long periods. Their diet includes hay, wheat, grass, leaves, bushes, and flowers.
Life & Family
Nigerian Dwarf Goats are highly social animals and typically live in herds. These groups are often led by an older female. Females commonly give birth to twins, though triplets and even quadruplets can occur. They usually live 10 to 15 years on average.
Fun Fact
Nigerian Dwarf Goats are excellent climbers and love to explore their surroundings. They can easily scale small rocks, boulders, hills, and play structures, which is part of what makes them so fun to watch.
Status
As a domesticated species, Nigerian Dwarf Goats are not assessed by the IUCN.
